Stickman and his family tree
29 Nov 2024This week in Form 1, the children have loved our focus on the story Stickman, by Julia Donaldson.
The children were all familiar with the tale of a poor stick who gets carried far away from his family tree. The children loved watching the BBC adaptation on the CTouch board as well as listening to the story being read aloud to them. We discussed the season changing throughout the story and they all loved the ending, as Father Christmas helps Stick Man finally return home.
In literacy, the children sequenced pictures of the events that happen in the story and they could talk about each part confidently. Then the children wrote speech bubbles to match the story. We started with the simple sentence, I am Stick Man. We counted the number of words on our fingers and discussed how important finger spaces are. The children then decided on their own sentences they would like to write. They listened carefully for the sounds in each word and they could all spell the tricky word I independently.
In maths this week ,the children have been focusing on 2D shapes. We have discussed the names and properties of the shapes and explored some new 2D shapes such as rhombus trapezium. Using our coloured shape tiles, the children each made pictures or patterns, identifying the shapes they had used. There were lots of conversations about how some shapes can work together to make new shapes and the different types of triangles there are. The children also loved using shapes dipped in paint to print pictures.
It was really exciting to visit the book fair and it was lovely that everyone was able to choose one book to take home. I think the children made some excellent choices and I am sure they all enjoyed sharing them with you back at home.
A big part of our week has been rehearsing for our play ‘The Grumpy Innkeeper’. The children are doing so well and the songs and story are really coming together. They were super excited to try on their costumes, get into character and use all the props!
Linking to our story of the week, the children have had fun building boats for Stick Man to use to travel home to his family tree. Using lots of junk-modelling materials, the children loved adding masts, flags, anchors and even naming their boats. The children explored different methods of joining materials together, using tape, a glue gun and split pins. Once the boats were completed, we visited the pond to test them out! Some were more successful than others, but it was certainly lots of fun!
Another busy week in Form 1 full of learning and fun.
