Computing

We aim to enrich the quality of pupils’ learning through active involvement with Computing, individually and collaboratively.

Computing is an integral part of the classroom experience and we aim to ensure children’s experiences are coherent, progressive and relevant as they progress through our school.

We help pupils develop the necessary skills to use computers and the internet in a safe way and present computing as a creative process, encouraging children to use their own initiative, imagination and reasoning. 

At Russell House computing is taught as a discrete subject in order to develop basic skills, but crucially it is also embedded so that pupils are expected to undertake what we call ‘digital tasks’ across all areas of the school curriculum using Google Classroom.

Selected highlights:

  • From Form 1 and continuing throughout the school, pupils learn coding.
  • In Form 7, children apply their knowledge in the development of their own apps.
  • Children in Form 2 make and publish their own digital talking books. In Form 3 they focus on databases and mind mapping software. In Form 4 they begin their journey into email communication and the collaborative world of Google’s cloud-based sharing facilities.
  • In Form 5, work is done on creating websites and wikis as a means of sharing information.
  • In Form 6 pupils begin to delve into the world of design and computer-aided drafting to create virtual art galleries where their virtual art work may be displayed.

The Computing Club is run each term by the Head of Computing and offers pupils the opportunity to enjoy activities using a range of computer programmes. These include: creating and editing a wiki; avatar creation; web generators used to develop logos and other images; photo editing; and making animations and videos.
